As per the Digi Dhan Mission of Government of India, the role of DoT is to achieve and promote digital payment systems and hold workshops and campaigns for promoting the same with MeitY. The target under the Mission was to undertake special campaigns to promote digital payments at the retailers end in Smart Cities. The workshops/ Melas were to be held in coordination with Telecom Service Providers, NPCI, Banks, CEO Smart Cities and Municipal Commissioners of the Smart Cities.
Nine Cities in Maharashtra & Goa and two in Union Territories designated as Smart Cities were delegated to CCA MH & Goa under the Digital Mission. A write up emphasizing the role of telecommunications as valuable partners and the relationships with different levels of city and municipal government and how the Internet of Things can provide smarter solutions and opportunities to manage resources, create better quality of life through Smart healthcare, Smart payments, Smart Utilities and Smart transport was shared with few state smart city coordinators.

All the Melas /Workshops arranged were attended by the CEO Smart Cities and their officials, Municipal Commissioners and their officials of the Smart Cities as per their schedules. Representative from various trade/retailer associations, Pensioners’ Associations, Telecom Service Providers and their agents, Banks and local publics also attended. Representative from NPCI delivered lectures, made presentations on various Unified payment Options and demo with hands on. SBI too gave a brief on role of SBI in Digital Payment. Wide coverage for the Digital Payment Mela was also given by the media (news and newspaper).
